How does one become a real estate agent?

I’m finishing up my junior year of college next week (thank God lol). My major is interior design. I LOVE it! But I also know it’s hard to get jobs and make decent money unless you live in a big city (I have school loans to pay off!). I have no desire to live anywhere bigger than Myrtle Beach. And being that that area is already saturated with designers, thanks to HGTV, and due to the fact that for some reason, most southerners tend to decorate their own homes beautifully (or at least think they can), I’m at a loss. IDS requires that for someone to be a licensed interior designer, they have to get a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college, complete one year and a half of “design experience” and pass a licensing exam.

I agree (with check with the state requirements of where you want to live) and yes you will take course and pass a test (required) however keep in mind – this market is flat – we have lost almost 40% of our Realtors in MN for example – and you ony get paid when you sell something so plan on having alot of $ put aside to help pay those bills you want to take care of – this business (RE) will cost you money every month (and lots of it depending on which broker you work for) and you have to pay those costs whether or not you have a closing. It’s not stable field of work to get into right now. I’d suggest you find a good Realtor and try to work with them to stage possible listings. Go talk to a RE broker (even before you get a license) and have them tell you what kind of expenses you will have in this business before you decide to do it – it’s not cheap – took me about $3000 to get licensed and then didn’t make any real money for almost 2 yrs (just made enough to cover work related expenses)
